Hi all. . . .I have a sick hen and I don't know what to do. . .I noticed she wasn't her energetic self the day before yesterday but she was still walking around and eating. Yesterday I gave her some pellets and she refused to eat and was lethargic. I brought her in the house and force fed her some scrambled eggs and electrolyte water. She started drinking on her own but still wouldn't eat. Her poop is a clear watery with dark green specks mixed in. Put her in a pack n play in the carport overnight when I was satisfied with the amount she drank. Now this morning she has pecked at some food and has drank a tiny bit but is still lethargic and ruffled up hanging out in one spot in my kitchen. Poop is the same as yesterday. Also her neck bumps are kind of flat.

I have to leave for work in about 2 hours. . .does anyone have any suggestions? I've checked if she's egg bound and no, nothing there. Checked for mites, nothing there. No cold or respiratory symptoms. Fowl pox just went through my flock but she didn't get it and doesn't have any symptoms of it.

I've attached a picture of her right now. Please excuse the mess under her - that's crumbs from her eating a bit and shavings she preened out of her feathers

Could she have coccidiosis or blackhead? You could mix some cayenne pepper in with her food or force feed her a cayenne paste (a teaspoon or more is best) just in case before you leave, I have treated turkeys that had coccidiosis with cayenne. You could also add a little to her water but in my experience that is not as effective. Good luck!

She could have either but no other symptoms. I have corid and tylan 50 on hand. . . Can I shoot the cayenne paste in her mouth if she won't eat it?

Yes just be careful not to get any down her trachea. I've never used corid or tylan so not sure what the dosing would be though, sorry.

When mine are sick and refuse to eat I usually male small balls of paste (cayenne mixed with enough water to stay together) that are about pea sized and put them in their beak one at a time and let them swallow in between each. Just another option if you need it.

Can you post a picture of her poop? Has she ever been de-wormed with something like Valbazen or Safeguard?
