Sick/ Weak Chick on Corid

One of my new chicks is sick/ weak. It has a hunched over/ puffed up appearance and weak in general so I suspect cocci. I started corid last night. The chick is not interested in eating or drinking so I have been giving corid water with a syringe. It isn’t going to the bathroom much either. It feels so thin and fraile. What can I do to perk it up? Or does it just need time? I’m a new chick owner and am just trying to do what I can!

About a week old or less I believe. I thought it was too young to have cocci but aren’t those characteristics pretty telling? I saw orange/ red tinged poop with the other chicks last night so I started treating them as well. Was that the right move?

Those are just symptoms of a bird that doesn’t feel good. Orange tinged poop could be cecal poop, which is normal. I would try NutriDrench first and see if it perks up. Pictures of the suspect poop, the chick and your setup would be good so you can get some more specific advice

Chicks are pretty fragile so I usually assume they aren’t sick but struggling to thrive due to not eating enough, not being able to regulate their own body temp and therefore being too cold, or just stressed from shipping/traveling, etc. My point is there are more likely causes to rule out first

Your response has been more helpful than you know! I didn’t realize cecal poop could have the orange tinge. We stopped and got some NutriDrinch to try. Hopefully that will turn this one around. I will take pictures when I can! Would you suggest keeping it isolated until stronger? My original thought was if it is sick I wanted to separate it. I have it in a separate small brooder I set up and it is under a heat plate.

No need to separate it. That might cause more stress. Just take the chick starter and make a kind of gruel with the nutridrench and maybe a little water. Like oatmeal consistency. See if it will eat a little if you hold it up to it’s beak. Usually a few bites is a good start. If it doesn’t go for that, a little egg yolk is always good too. Whatever it doesn’t eat the others can have cause it doesn’t keep well anyway. You can also put some in water and dip your finger in and dip that on it’s beak to see if it will try that.

I have saved many a flagging chick this way but if it doesn’t perk up and start eating and drinking on it’s own within a few hours (I’d say six or so) then keep posting and we can tag someone with more experience.
