I'm not very good at this, so I'm asking the experts for help. No crowing yet, but has a larger comb than my other silkie and longer tail feathers. Thoughts?

Could you all help me out with the things you look at when determining a hen silkie? I noticed my other silkie that crows has a much wider comb, but I'm curious to learn more.

Absolutely, In a rooster the waddles will start to get very long before the comb crows. He will also get a large blue/green patch behind his ear. As far as the comb goes, she may have a rose comb instead of a straight comb.

Bearded silkies do not show wattles. Beadless silkies do. Males generally have a wider, more grotesque comb. Females have a narrower comb. Sorry but, I hate the walnut combs and think it absolutely distorts an otherwise beautiful breed. Can't believe silkie breeders wanted walnut combs. :sick

This is my little buddy. Roughly 5 months or so. You can see his waddles and comb. Thats the only way i could tell. That and my other 2 silkies are hens so the differences are very apparent when side by side.

Guess I'm fuzzy on what a waddle is. I get the comb thing, but from your pic yours looks like a hen to me, because the comb isn't walnut shaped.
