I'm new to this whole chicken stuff. I'm having a great time raising my silkies. But I have recently had 5 chicks hatch and ever since then one of my roosters attacks me when I come near the coop. Even though the baby chicks are no longer there. I also had another rooster that loved to be held and in the last two days has also started attacking me. They are relentless with the attack and do not back down. Any suggestions? Would love any all input.

Personally, I am a rooster snob. I don't give them a second chance to come at me. They get one and only one chance. There are far too many good roosters out there to put up with a mean one.

I agree with this 100%, there is no reason to put up with that behavior.

There are techniques to training roosters to behave. Lots of threads here on BYC. But sometimes roosters are set in their ways and there is no changing their attitudes. I personally would never keep a rooster that was aggressive and definitely don't hatch eggs from a hen that mated with an aggressive rooster as you can pass this behavior on down to the offspring. So if you can't control him, send him to the stew pot.

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X5, There are so many nice roosters out there, I don't see much point in putting up with a nasty one.

It's unanimous - the bad boys have to go. Once you have 20 posts, you can participate in the BYC Buy,sell, trade forum. Frequently there are silky cockerels and roosters that are beautiful and well behaved - because it's a buyers market for males - the prices are reasonable. You would have quite a color choice as well.

Welcome to BYC. Good decision on not tolerating that human aggression - it can be an inherited trait. The increasing day period is causing increases in testosterone levels and your roosters are responding with aggression - still not a legitimate excuse. Our chickens are supposed to be for fun.
