Black & blue will give you both blue and black. Blue & buff will give you some buff, some blue and some odd mixed colours. Same with black, although you run the risk of increasing black in the areas of the buff where you do not want black. White x any other colour can give you just about anything. White is an OFF switch that prevents the appearance of a bird's genetic colouring.

Depends on your preference. But just so you know, since you are ordering from a hatchery, your most likely not going to get good quality birds. If you are showing for 4-H then you may get lucky and win something, but more likely than not you won't get far with hatchery birds. If you are serious about showing then buy chickens from a breeder. If you are just doing this for fun, then order from where ever you like.

If you plan to show, you need to purchase birds from a breeder, not a hatchery. Hatchery birds make fine barnyard animals and pets, but are almost never suitable for exhibition. And you certainly shouldn't sell their chicks for people wanting exhibition birds.

I ordered chicks last year from McMurry and I'm dissapointed in the quality. I'm trying to find a local breeder, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Well, it depends on where you're located and what you're looking for. Find and join a local poultry club, join the ABA or APA, join a breed club, subscribe to Poultry Press, check out eggbid and ovabid

I just read the thread title and realized you are interested in silkies. What colour and where are you located? americansilkiebantamclub.com is the website for the silkie club. You can also check out the silkiebantampoultryclassifieds yahoo group.

if u r looking for show stock unfortunately u will never find that with a hatchery because they breed for quanity in mass amounts not for the quality of their stock. u should find a private breeder to get ur stock from who raises their birds to the apa/aba standards. cross colored silkies r not showable it has to be a regognized coloration.

i show as well as help run shows locally i must tell u there is a huge differance between hatchery quality and exhibition quality. anything that looks pet or hatchery quality we r not even suppost to let enter right from the start or even do bloodwork on them for exhibition testing.

the most showed colors i see when showing silkies in main silkie class is white, buff, splash, blue but there is other exceptable colorations, most being white though. in aov class(all other variety class) u see non standard colors such as cuckoos cuz apa/aba has not recognised that color yet.
silkie
