Hi BYC!

I'm wondering that if I buy a Silkie Chicken, can they lay on the fertile quail eggs and hatch them? I've heard of it before and I want to see if it works.

Thanks :)

Oh man I really need the <eating popcorn> emoticon here...

You're going to get mixed opinions but I say yes it can be done, whether or not you will succeed I don't know.

Pick the ones with the thickest shells so she doesn't crush them. Just be prepared for disease issues should they arise, keeping chickens in contact with game birds is not recommended. it would be wise to keep something to treat coryza on hand since chickens often carry it without showing any symptoms.

DC dont you think it would be prudent to separate them after 3 days or so?

Definitely. I would probably do it as soon as they dry out. Silkies are usually good moms but I'd hate for her to suffocate one or step on it and give it spraddle legs.. A silkie chick is small but it's still almost 3 times the size of a cot chick. Plus the chicks eating adult chicken feces is going to substantially raise their likely hood of contracting anything.
