Silkie chicks dying off 1 by 1 ......5 dead now!!!! **Update**

Could it be the other chicks in the brooder are jostling them to the point where they aren't getting enough to eat?

Can you set up a separate brooder just for the silkies?

I'm trying to eat lunch and scroll thru posts at the same time so it may have been mentioned (probably) but are they eating the pine shavings?

Is your brooder open on at least one side so fresh air can get in? A friend lost lots of chicks due to ventilation, she had them in a large box with tall sides and air could not circulate. They need to have lots of fresh air flowing thru. If you could take them outside at least once a day for a while this might help.

any ideas what happened? I am going through the same issues it seems like and I'm at my wit's end.. dont want to lose anymore babies but it seems like no matter what they keep dying.. have four out of seven left.

This is a 4 year old thread. If you are having chicks die, start a new thread and tell your history and symptoms so that you might get some help.

I'm having problems with my silkie chicks too,and these are my own birds that i let the hens hatch! I never had a problem before. They seem fine for a few days or more, than they just die, showing no signs of illness. I do have a few with pasty butt that I have to clean, but other than that - nothing. They seem to get lighter, even though I've been feeding them Exact formula on top of their Southern States chick starter ,which is very small crumbles. I've switched feed a few times, containers, they are on newspapper with a heat lamp, but the storage bin is long so they have room to get away from it. I give clean water every day,tried Terrimycin etc....but still they die. My seramas are fine and my peachicks.

I’m having the same problem. Chicks the mom hatched, seem lathargic, off balance then stop moving and die one by one. Not all, but about half. Had 3 yesterday, one going down now, one not moving very much. Had babies in this coop for years, never lost one. Could adults be passing on something to them?
