Just rec'd some really nice looking silkie chicks. They are blues/splashes. Just a quick question: I would assume that those with white tips on their toes are not SQ? Someone once told me that the toes will darken to their normal color over time. Is this true?

Also, do those with single combs breed single-combed babies? (I was an English/History major - my knowledge of genetics is deplorable!!!)

Thanks.

The white tips should darken up over time. All the ones I have had with white tips or whole toes darkened up.
That doesn't mean they are not SQ unless they stay white.

Single combed birds will breed single comb babies but I'm sure in what percentage if the other parent isn't single combed.

Single comb is the recessive allele for both rose and pea comb genes. If bred to a silkie who is homozygous for walnut comb (two copies of the rosecomb gene and two of the peacomb gene) all chicks will have walnut combs, but will have only one copy of each (heterozygous). If the silkie is het. for one or both genes, it becomes a bit more complicated; you could have offspring of single, rose pea and walnut combs.

Single Comb: r/r p/p

Homozygous Walnut Comb: R/R P/P

Heterozygous Walnut Comb: R/r P/p
