My family and I purchased laying hens 2 years ago. I began studying different breeds and decided upon the Silkie breed, as a 4-H project for my 7 year old grandson. Currently we have 16 chickens- half are Silkies and the other breeds are New Hampshire and Australorps.

In my grandson’s first 2 show experiences, he won Reserve Champion for both his pullet and cockerel. I enjoy teaching him and helping him care for the chickens, designing their space, and learning about genetics and hatching.

I retired from higher education administration and returned to Texas and my roots as a rancher’s daughter. I enjoy outdoor activities, such as gardening and chickens are a wonderful compliment.

In researching breeding, genetics, and general care of chickens, I found BYC online and felt it offered sound advice. As I further invest in breeding/ showing Silkies, it was time to join the BYC community.
