My two wonderful silkies simply cannot see! I know I've heard of trimming around their eye feathers...anyone do this? It's getting to be a little ridiculous-poor things can't findtheir way into the coop for water, they walk into the fences, ....

Yes I would trim if they cant see, because they cant protect themselves. I lay mine on my knees on their back and pluck the hair out around their eye balls they do not mind and actually run around like a happy fool after doing it.

You pluck it? And they don't mind? I don't even like plucking my own eyebrows!

I also have a silkie in need of a haircut, but I'm just too chicken (harhar) to do it . . .

We hold the silkie up to our own eye level and if we can't see their eyes they get a trim. But they are pets not show birds. We use the little baby scissors with the rounded tips to prevent any eye injuries. And be sure to take caution handling their heads as their brains often have no boney skull, just soft tissue, skin, and feathers covering the brain. So it is very easy to bruise their brain and then you are in for weeks of special care. So be careful and gentle, but clipping will allow them to see food and predators.
