The coop is riddled with flies and smells. Something is wrong. The silkie is all black on the bottom, she is still walking around and eating. But I know something is so wrong. Does anyone have any ideas?

the chicken has a bad smell and there are flies flying around her vent. could this be maggots?

Trim all her feathers around her vent short So that way, her feces isn't getting stuck. Then give her a bath with dawn dish soap. Bc its so hot right now, its probably ok to let her air dry. But after you trim her feathers and bathe her, you will be able to get a better view on whats going on in her vent area. Good Luck!

the silkie just went back to the coop. He never did that before. Not to many poultry vets around on Long Island, this does not look good.

Possible fly strike. Look in the vent and check for openings in the abdomen. Could be a massive internal infection that flies laid eggs in and the bird may be full of maggots. Cetawin has a thread that is very relevant to this in Emergencies "Leg Injury..." very recent. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/689889/leg-injury-infection-and-fatality-graphic-pics

If he had a wound or an abcess, flies can lay eggs and the abdomen can fill with maggots. If that is the case, please put him down ASAP.
