My two silkies seem to molt a lot, at least more than my other girls.
Is this normal? Do silkies loose more feathers as they’re softer? They don’t look bald in any spots but you can see their feathers scattered around their closed area and where they sleep there are a collection feathers on the floor.

This is a good question, I hope someone with more experience with silkies will be able to help answer!

I've actually been wondering the same myself as a few of my girls are also loosing a lot of feathers lately. I was a bit confused by it as they are only around a year old and I heard the first molt typically happens around 18 months or so and more towards late summer/early fall. I do think they are most likely molting though as I've found no mites/lice and the first to start really loosing a lot of feathers has now grown them back fully and looks very nicely filled out again.

Maybe our girls are just getting ready for the summer! They don’t have any noticeable bald patches but lots of new pink feathers growing. I’m not sure of the exact ages of my girls but they haven’t started laying yet so maybe they’re loosing some of their baby feathers... I hope this is the case! They seem very happy and healthy otherwise.

Sorry no one replied. I'm gonna try to find some help for you.

Thank you! I’m hoping it’s them loosing some of their teenage feathers? They haven’t started laying yet and I have had them for over 2 months now. Also probably some feather loss from bullying from the other girls (hybrid layer hens), for the most part they get along ok but sometimes they will get the odd peck.

Half my flock is molting right now. There are always a few here in spring that irritate me by doing that. Most wait until summer.

My silkies don't usually get the naked look that my large fowl get.
