Silkie Nest Size?

What is the minimal nest size for Silkies?

There are two concerns; small coop size and I don't want my heavy breeds to use the Silkie nests.

Usually everyone wants the same nest box and there is no way to predict if your Silkies will use the nest you built for them or the standards' nests.

What don't you make one long nest box and let the birds sit where ever they want ?

Yeah, they will all go for the same few nests, I wouldn't be surprised if your silkie wanted to lay in the larger boxes. Just make them all the same size and they will be fine. What is the reason you want the silkie to haver her own box anyways?

The heavy breed nests are too high for the Silkies. Lowering the nests is not feasible, either is a ramp, the coop is too small.

There is enough nests for the heavy breeds but not for the 'recent' Silkie addition (8). So a nest addition is needed.

I'm guessing that 8" cubes will be large enough for a Silkie and too small for the heavy breeds won't take them over. I would like to know what others have experienced.

All I can tell you is that my half grown silkies fly up to the big guys roost...my little roo just shoves his way in with the big alpha rooster and perches with him. The two little hens just go up about 3 feet to roost so I don't think nesting boxes will be too high.
