Silkie chick just picked up from TSC, looks to have one leg issue. The leg works, but she seems to have little control over it. It can bend and move freely (no locked joints, full range of motion) and sometimes the chick can pull it up under itself, but most often it seems to just straighten itself out and end up stuck behind her. Eventually, she'll move or roll around and get it fixed and then sits almost upright on her tush.

So, I brought it home to see if I could fix it. Got it taped up as would be the case for spraddle leg, thinking that it'd help keep it from stretching out so often and keep it more under the chick. It seems to be working somewhat, for now. Yall know how tough it is to tape a silkies legs up without getting the sticky part on the feathers?

She seems alright, other then noisy. It doesn't hurt her, as when I palpated the leg, she just layed in my hand staring at me like I was nuts

I think she's rather frusterated with herself, at this point.

Any of yall have any other suggestions I might try?

Ok, so I just figured I'd post an update....

Said silkie chick stayed taped till this afternoon. She was having too rough of a time getting around, so we pulled off the tape and figured we'd give her 24 hours then decide if we'll cull or not.. well!!! An hour or two later I checked back on em, and she was runnin around like the rest of them.. YAY!! She still has a slight leg splay, after she runs for a bit, but is 200% better. At least she can stand and walk somewhat normally now!

Now, if she still is doin this well tomorrow night, I'll let the kids name her

I'm sorry you got no responses yesterday, but so glad to her she is doing better. It amazes me how quickly chick leg issues respond to taping. My chick had crooked toes. I taped them and was only able to keep the tape on for 2 hours, and only by holding her in my lap all that time. Whenever I put her down she would fall over trying to peck the tape off. I was afraid she would hurt herself. Even after that short time, her toes straightened out and 2 weeks later are normal. Better have some good names ready for your chick!
