I have a 1 year old silkie who randomly started limping on her right leg. I have felt all over her, soaked her in Epsom salt. There is for sure no bumble foot, she's still eating and drinking fine. Giving me eggs every other day (normal for her) I've searched for advice and I haven't been successful.
About 5-6 weeks ago I found lice/mites on my breeding pen (Silver laced wyandotte roo and hens) Because my 2 pens share the coop (I have two "stalls"), I had to treat the whole flock because I was afraid I was missing something even though I checked everyone in my layer pen and didn't see anything. I treated by creating a permethrin dip in a 5 gallon bucket and dipped everyone and let them soak about 30 seconds each.( absolutely no bugs now) but I wanted to include this information because I also noticed on her belly and partially under her wings she is bare and her skin is peeling. Along her keel bone there was a tiny scab and what looks like a light bruise but because her skin is black it's hard to tell it that's actually a bruise or just normal.
She does NOT seem neurological. She can walk a straight line when she wants, she just limps. Today when I tried to catch her she ran like everything from me. Shes normally pretty tame because I raised her from a chick. So idk if she's just done with me poking and prodding or what it is.
There is a lot of things that could account for all these symptoms.
Bare stomach= broody , butttt, she's not showing any other signs of broodiness. Peeling skin = silkies have skin problems or maybe the permethrin was too strong for her and it caused a skin reaction.
Keel bone "bruise" and scab = maybe she's just laying down way more and that caused the irritation.
But with all of this combined, am I missing something ? Is it a sprained tendon ? How do I know for sure ? I don't feel a definite break. And I don't have an avian vet available anywhere close to me.
Also, the pen she is in does have a pretty good drop out of the chicken door. I keep a board on there with little pegs along it to help, but with all the rain recently it had made the wood soft and a lot of the pegs fell off so it was really just a board. Could she have slipped ? None of my other girls have any issues. This has been going on for 12 days now with her. The last permethrin treatment was about a week before she started limping. No new birds introduced in 5 months. I've been putting her up at night because she doesn't roost very well as it is. Even before her limp she would roost on the ground or on the poop board below the roost bars. (Grosssss) and I let her out during the day but I pick her up and sit her outside in the run so she doesnt have to walk down the ramp. The last 2 days I've added 2mls of Poultry cell in a syringe directly into her mouth and I also diluted some in a 1 gallon waterer for the whole group. She's getting egg yolk about every 3 days. And I have given her an Epsom salt soak and she enjoyed it, but it didn't seem to help the limping. I feel terrible locking her up all day because she constantly clucks to her friends and wants to be with them, but if I do need to put her on strict stall rest, I can..
