Got kind of a weird question here- If Silkies get caught in the rain and choose to not go in there coop will they get soaked to the skin? Just wondering because they don't have the hard feathering a regular chicken does. Everytime it looks like rain I put them all in as I don't want them to get drenched and get chilled !! Will the rain repel off of them?

I want to know the answer to thqat question, too.

They do get very wet, I assume all the way to the skin. Water doesn't roll off of the feathers like a regular chicken. My little Silkie girl actually likes to get wet, but there's no risk of chilling right now in Texas! If it were cold outside, I would make sure they're put up.

Actually, in my experience, silkies do get a bit wet and do not have any problems. I have given one a bath before that I bought at a show. That was the hardest thing I have ever done. Getting the silkie soaked to lather the soap was very hard. It took me quite a while to get it soaked to the skin. I think it would take a long, soaking rain to soak them to the skin. I think they are fine with the rain. I have not had any problems with mine and I have over 40 silkies.

I am new to the chicken world. I have 8 Silkies of various ages, but they are all housed together and get along (so far). BUT, they absolutely will not go in out of the rain. Everytime it rains, I have to go out and put them inside.

I don't mind if they stay out and hunt worms while it's raining, I just don't want them getting soaked ,chilled and then Ill. Mayby I'll leave them out once when it's a soaker and see how wet they do get. It really rained hard all day here. A tornado even went through Mpls this afternoon. My Silkies hate having to be in their coop during the day if they don't absolutly have to. They love it outside, even in the rain, LOL.

I have 7 white silkies and they all stay out IN the rain - no matter how hard it rains. They have complete shelter very close by but always choose to stay out. If I herd them in they go right back out.

Yes, they will get soaked completely, unlike regularly feathered birds.

The only time I am concerned about their being wet is when the weather is cool/cold...especially if there is not time for them to dry before nightfall. Our silkies free-range in large paddocks all day when the weather is nice. In the winter, we keep them in their coop if it is raining or even drizzling rain.
