I live in a community of small towns where most folks with chickens, goats, horses and other livestock tend to interact a lot. We all end up buying and selling stock or equipment from one another.

Well, a friend of mine had Silkie chicks for sale and I brought home 15 of them almost all of them white, but a handful of them are black. They are as cute as can be and I am glad to finally have some, as my kids have been asking for "the chickens who are in their pajamas" for a while now.....but I am wondering why I read posts saying Silkies are "evil" and such?

Anyone want to enlighten this new Silkie owner or are you going to make me find out the hard way????

hmm. I've never heard of an evil Silkie! I know my Silkie chicks are a little skiddish but I would be too if I had a huge monster trying to pick me up. but once I catch them they settle down and go to sleep in my lap!

This post is news to me!

I sold off my whole flock of silkies for $10 because they were evil. Meanest roosters you ever met and I have game bantams too!! I am sure there are nice ones and I'm sure their are people who find them "perfect" but if you are just wanting a broody... there are other breeds that brood just as well. They are not at all "the best"... any game hen would be a better choice. Personally I have no idea why people goo-goo and gah-gah over them. YUCK!

The list of breeds I have had is longer than I am tall and that is one breed, maybe the only breed, I would never even try again.

Silkies are awesome. Most of them have great personalities. Just remember, their are mean specimen in every breed. Chicks are skiddish but that's not just with silkies. How you raise them also affects their temperament.

I did write my post tongue in cheek, because I am fairly sure that folks are just kidding about Silkies being "evil"....but you have ask.....

From what I have read, they are supposed to be sweet and friendly. I sure hope it is true.

Evil?? Someone may have been referring to a snotty roo? There are bad boys in any breed, don't let that make you think all Silkies are evil.

Mine are only 2 1/2 weeks old, and this is my first go with Silkies too. Can't yet say I see any "evil" chicks in the bunch.

I wasn't aware silkies had a bad reputation. It's one of the most popular breeds from all that I've read. I have heard people who don't like silkies, but that usually has to do with them just seeing them as pointless puff-ball heads who aren't real chickens, or they just find silkies ugly. I've never heard anyone call them evil. The one rooster I used to have was skittish and a bit on the stupid side, but he was never evil.

Even the hens spared with each other. I'm not joking and I'm sure some of you may have as much experience with various breeds as I but there are far more meanies in that bunch you all call silkies than you all admit. Cochins would be a better pet/broody choice anyday.

LOL you may have just been unlucky? Roosters of any breed CAN be mean. I think people goo goo and gah gah over the way the look. Game hens don't have big crests and fuzzy feathers. That's what makes em so cool.

I don't think they are Evil but they are quite stupid though. They sleep right under the roosts!

So they get pooed on and I give them atleast a bath every 2 weeks because they would be covered in poop. And they go broody before they ever even lay an egg!

I have a silkie hen that is broody the fifth time this year! FIFTH!

But they are pretty looking when they are done molting and aren't poop covered.
