Hello, I have a one year old silky hen who has began losing feathers, bleeding. She has been broody since April and not laying but has been normal otherwise. Is this normal for molting??

My guess is she's molting and those are new feathers, blood feathers. When new feathers come in, pin feathers, the shaft is filled with blood until the feather is finished forming. Once the feather is formed the blood withdraws and the shaft flakes off revealing the new feather. If those blood feathers are broken off you will have bleeding. You can stop it with pressure or a bit of corn starch, if it won't stop you can pull the shaft and put pressure on the skin where it was (I use needle nose pliers to grab ahold and pull firmly- I only pull them if they don't want to stop bleeding). You may have another chicken pecking at the new feathers causing them to break, or a roo damaging them, some observation will answer that. Once there is blood visible, then it will encourage further pecking. Broken feathers may not be replaced until the next molt. Any that are pulled may, but no guarantees, it still may not be until next molt.
