I am debating on getting a rooster. My main reason for getting one will be more to "look out for the girls" as opposed to breeding ( I don't want to hatch out any babies.) Therefore, I want one that is easy going, won't drive the girls nuts, but still a good protector. ( I've also been told that they balance out the flock.) I know that silkies are gentle, but do they make good protectors? I also have been told to stick with bantams. I do want to stick with a smaller breed, since I have some bantam hens. I am going to look at some possible prospects this morning, just wanted some info to help me decide. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I'm sure he would do the job the best he could for his girls. As far as smaller breeds my little Serama rooster that I used to have didn't know he was little. He even picked fights with the turkeys.

A small roo can sound the predator warning(s) and there are more than one predator warnings they make; but I think a silky's vision would be obscured and make it difficult for him to see everything, all the time. I guess you could trim his head fluff or tie it up as some folks do. This is just MHO, since I don't have silkies. I have a monster roo that weighs 13 lbs.

Actually, I agree. They're good little roosters, but if you plan on free ranging your flock, I'd trim his topknot so as not to obstruct his vision.
