My ducklings are only 6 days and since I received them I watered them from a small, black plastic tray (think chinese food container) that they can, and do, jump into and play in. I fill it, let them play and drink until the water is gone and I remove it until they've dried up so they're not always wet.

While watching some of the babies I notice they'll hop into the water and just stand around in it, not drinking. Then after a few moments, they'll hop back out to let someone else have a go at just standing in the water. Do ducks "absorb" water? I know it's an absurd question, but when given fresh drinking water, they'd rather just take some time to stand in it!

Being water birds, so they like to be in the water! They jump and splash and just stand around in it!
So no, they do not absorb water.

No, they do not absorb water. However their water can "Disappear" by them splashing it out of the container, drinking it, or if you leave the water a few days it can evaporate.
