I have Buff Orpingtons, but only ladies so I don't know how the roosters usually behave. I absolutely adore the Orpingtons and am considering adding some Silver Laced Orpingtons to the flock and replacing an aggressive Rhode Island Red Roo with a Silver Laced Orpington Roo. I have small children so aggressive roosters aren't tolerated. Does anyone have experience with these that would be willing to share?

I have heard they can be very friendly but that will be luck based really. There is no breed of chicken that has 100% friendly roosters. Some suggest how they are raised plays a big role in weather or not they will be aggressive. So he could be a great rooster, or a bad one. I have had tons of RIR roosters and had one instance where one of them attacked someone once, so there is an example, I have had great experience with RIR roosters, you have not unfortunately.

Temperment has much to do with breeding. If you have a source from breeder the odds of well behaved cockerels is very high.

The silver laced roos I have encountered (including my own) are very laid back and easy to handle. Even more so than my regular otps. Hes one of the only ones I can walk up to and just pick up without running off or making a bunch of noise. Love my silver laced guy!

My Silver-laced male is a doll. He's really gentle and kind of a clutz. I have to pick him up fairly often. He and the hen are both really calm. He doesn't struggle at all when he's picked up.
