Silver Laced Wyandotte or Dominque? **More Pics**

Quote:
Hmmmm..... maybe the call them all Dominiques because of the uneven barring.

Aren't Dominiques smaller than Barred Rocks?

Ivy looks like a big girl. The other chickens in this post look so small, that is also why I thought Dominique.

Dominiques are lighter built with higher carrid tails and heads, plus a rose comb. That looks like a barred rock to me. It's possible it's a dominique that happened to get a single comb, but as for the barring if it's not from show stock, it can look like pretty much anything XD

Barred Rock for sure... Silver Laced Wyandottes have more of a lacey pattern. She's very beautiful!

I think your girl is a Barred Rock, just a hatchery Barred Rock. Doms do have rose combs and more of a sway-backed type build, less stocky than BRs. My Ivy is just an example of how the hatcheries are not turning out quality Barred Rocks because she looks more like a Cuckoo Marans hen except for her leg color.

I understand what you mean about show quality barring, but...

I am not only talking about the fact that the barring isn't straight, but also the thickness of the bars.

Barred Rocks having even 'black' and 'white' bars.

Dominiques having bigger 'white' bars than 'black'.

For example, Ivy doesn't have straight barring but the 'black' and 'white' bars are pretty much the same thickness. But Portia's chicken has bigger 'white' bars than 'black' bars. And on brewmiss96's chick's wings it looks like the 'white' is getting bigger than the 'black'.

Does that make sense?

Holy Moly! Never thought this was such a debated issue. I am inclined to think that she's a Barred Rock because they did have all three (GWL with SWL, Dominiques and Barred Rocks) when I first went, but I think all the Barred were gone when I bought them. SO I think the feed store tossed the leftover Barred in with the GWL because I doubt they would have put her in with the Dominiques because they are big on the heritage breeds there. The guy that they get the Dominiques is a heritage breeder so I'm sure if I had gotten a Dominique it would be obvious by now. However, to add to the debate, I found this site that is an interesting read. Holy Barring Batman!!

I know what you're saying, but take a look at this Barred Rock chick, hatched right here at my house, so I know this is a BR chick. Notice the wider white bars on the wings? Later on, as she matured and got her adolescent to adult feathers in, those had the more even barring you are talking about. I'm not saying it's impossible that she's a single combed Dom, but I think it's unlikely. Be interesting to see her as she grows up.

Thank you speckledhen. I am new to chickens and trying to learn the differences myself. I am very interested in all breeds of barred chickens. I am excited to see how she turns out too. I still don't even know if mine is a boy or girl yet,
