One of my little quail ladies laid a silver almost blue quail egg for me yesterday. I wonder if its because she is a possible mixed breed. It's really pretty.

Would someone be willing to hatch it (and keep the chick) for me? Please. If she lays another one today I'd send that one (and a couple regular eggs) along too. I have not been having great hatches else I'd try myself. I get some but not all hatch, I really want to see what the chick out of that egg (if its fertile) would look like.

I don't know which hen laid it. But it seems to be a new one because each hen seems to have a particular egg design that is unique to her. One of my hens lays a whiter egg with big brown patches, another a creamier colored egg with small speckles, etc.

I'll hatch them. I'm going to a sale in Tampa on Saturday if you want to meet me.

When are you going to Starke? On Saturday or a different day? If it's another day I'll be here and you'll go right past me. Just let me know.

Ok, then we'll have to figure out the timing since I'll be on the road and in Tampa most of the day. Do you know what time you're going?

I'm not entirely certain about other quail species but button egg color is not genetic. The same bird can lay a rainbow of eggs. It depends on how long the egg was in the bird and how stressed the bird is. It seems darker colors are actually more likely to be the result of healthier birds. When I added a lot of protein to their diet I got slightly purple tinted dark eggs for awhile. It may have been coincidence though. So far I found the lighter colored eggs are less likely to hatch than the darker ones. My first hatch I got lots of different colored eggs with many silvers and blues from someone and while they looked cool only 7 of 25 hatched. A few days ago I hatched 24 of 25 eggs that were all mostly dark from the offspring of those first 25 eggs. Same genetics but huge difference with the egg colors and hatch rates.
