Hello, we hatched a clutch of hamburg eggs that turned out to be three hens and one cockerel. We live in town and can't have a crowing rooster so our original plan was that we would raise any cockerels until they got their crow and then they would (insert air quotes) go to a farm. I am a vegetarian but my husband is not and he was very happy to have some free range meat.
Fast forward to four weeks after hatching, the hen has died and the chicks are living in our home office/guest room. They have names, they come up and sit on my desk while I work, and I really don't want Pancake the Cockerel to get eaten.
I was going to put him up online on Trademe (New Zealand's classified/auction website) but my friend warned me that roosters, especially flashy ones, can end up being used for cock fighting. As I see it, my options are to 1) find an actual farm (not an air quote one) that needs a rooster, failing that, 2) try a crow collar on him and see if we can fly under the radar, or 3) ......I don't have a third option.
Any suggestions on how to find a rooster a home that isn't going to eat him or put him into the ring?
