Hi, I'm in love with Icelandics as they tick all the boxes for me, based on my limited experience so far and what I've read:
  • Reliably lay through winter
  • Long laying life
  • Excellent foragers
  • A bit flighty, relatively predator savvy (moreso than a lot of breeds, though prob game breeds are best)
  • Hardy in cold weather (I'm in Canada)
  • Not bred to color standards so you can have a very diverse looking flock
  • Small but not bantams (I hear the meat, while not bulky, is uniquely flavorful, though I've yet to find out... I'm just one person so one is enough meat for me)

So basically I'm wondering what other breeds I might also like, based on this? No particular reason, I'm not getting any more chickens for a long time (closed flock, suspected MG). I'm just curious.

Besides coldhardy (my hens would still get frostbite during the winter but besides that they seemed okay), pheonixes check the boxes in my experience. Especially if you get multiple colors and just let them mingle, you'll get all sorts of things hatching
