Hello everyone!
I Thought I would just drop in and introduce myself.
Name is Stacy, almost 30 and I live upstate NY with my husband and my 7 year old son.
Currently we have 29 chickens we ordered from Murry Mcmurray, they arrived the 2nd week of October. We wound up with 4 roosters even though we only ordered 2. They just started laying about 2 weeks ago. Yesterday we got 11 eggs!
------------------------------------------
Here's my list, I'm about 98% sure that it is accurate due to my order form the catalog and my observations.
5 Araucanas - 4 hens are a beautiful brown and gold color. We ended up with a roo in the bunch he is so gorgeous, white and bluish feathers he used to be the main man in charge and would be brutal to the other chickens until one day we separated him from them for a day then the other guy took over.
1 Red Pyle ? - This would be the "free chicken" MM throws in. I am almost sure he is a Red Pyle given the photos and description I've read. This would be the guy that took Mr. Araucanas place. He is a nightmare! He will attack you if you point your finger in his direction or for any other reason. We have named him a very appropriate name for someone is mean. I will say that he has chilled out within the past week though. I guess he is a good rooster to have around, does his job well. It just kinda sucks fearing for your life when he is around. Funny thing is that since he took over Mr. Araucana is his minion, 2nd man in charge and they both walk around policing it's like he is taking orders.
4 Barred Rocks - All hens. 1 of them is blind in one eye, she might have other problems too. I named her Blind Betty. All the other chickens know she is disabled and they leave her alone, she spends all of her time by herself, it makes me sad so I spend a lot of time with her whether she likes it or not. We originally ordered 5 but one died about 3 day after we got them.
3 Black Australorps - Nither of them have any mentionable characteristics.
9 Road Island Reds - This is one of the roos we actually ordered and he is the biggest of the bunch but he gets bullied by Czar 1 and Czar 2, my son named him Static because of his large pointy comb. He is so docile and sweet, doesn't mind being held too much. We've made him our lawn ornament chicken when are doing yard work since he is so pretty but it isn't fun time when he goes back with the others. He has a broken cock-a-doodle-dooer, the tone is very deep and he can only get about half way through it. The rest of the RIR hens are very sociable one little girl likes to peck at my hair, and one likes to stand next to me and sing to me.
3 Silver Laced Wyandottes - These are the prettiest of the all the hens. Very sociable. One always expects to eat from my hand every time I feed them, she sits on the top perch and looks at me waiting for the hand of food.
2 Black Stars - Dear God these girls are loud, one of them screams at me anytime I am near. She HATES me, I know it. It is a nasty sound.
1 Single Comb Brown Leghorn - This is the other roo we ordered. We call him Floppy because he has a very floppy comb. Very very pretty bird. He also gets bullied by the 2 mean roos. I feel like he has become a hen. He also expects to eat from my hand along with the Wyandotte but is very skiddish if you try to pet him.
1 Black Minorca - This little girl is so cute. She is the smallest of the whole flock and is very FAST. Very skiddish but curious at the same time.
--------------------------
This is our second batch of chickens, the first try we had 9 that we got from my sons Kindergarten class last year but right around the time they were close to laying something (either a fox or a fisher cat) took out all of them. We learned a very valuable lesson from that tragedy which is to make sure the hatch is closed every night and that a fence will not keep a hungry critter from getting in.
We are still brand new to this chicken world so there is a lot to learn and that is why I am here. I look forward to educating myself and being social at the same time.
