Single chick with two moms

I had two broody hens at the same time. One hatched a single chick, then two days later, the other one hatched a single chick. The first chick died and now that mother hen wants the second chick. The chick has been going between the two moms all day and they don't seem to mind each other too much. I was planning on separating the mom and chick from the rest of the flock for safety reasons and also so that the rest of the flock can continue to go in their outside run (the holes in the fence are too big to contain a chick). Which hen should I move with the chick? Or both? I have also considered getting a few more chicks for them to raise so the second mom has some too and my local feed store just happened to get in day old chicks today, so it would be perfect timing. What do you think? Should I move both hens together? Should I get more chicks? They have both abandoned the rest of their eggs, so none of the others will hatch now.

I’d probably do a test - take the baby and give it to each mom separately. Who wants it more?

I had a similar situation with my two ducks that hatched a single duckling. They started fighting over it so after some trials to see which duck the baby wanted and vice versa, I picked one duck to mother it. I actually ended up taking the baby away though within a day because she decided she didn’t want it either (the other duck was actively attacking it by this point).

You may need to be ready to hand raise it yourself, which would mean getting a couple more chicks for it to grow up with! Hope this helps!
