Single Gander Question

Good morning. I've become the inexperienced mama of a one-year-old Chinese brown gander. Long story short, we rescued him from a 2-gander 1-goose situation in which he was being picked on by the other gander. He's apparently bonded with me, follows me around and seems to enjoy my company. He tolerates my husband and mother, but got pretty jealous when he saw me carrying my little grand-daughter. My question is, can/should I try to get another goose? I can't be outside with him all the time, and I'll be out much less in the winter. If so, what age should I get, and what sex? He's basically free-range, but with a large fenced area for nighttime protection. Thanks in advance for any suggestions - I've really learned a LOT from this group.

I would get a goose companion for him if you can. Gander/gander would be also fine if there are no geese available or near them. He would be much more happy since you can’t be with him 24/7. My four are always together. If I’m outside they hang with mama, unless I’m boring then will roam around grazing. It is cute to watch them sleep with their necks entwined and talk to each other in sleepy voices.

I HIGHLY recommend getting him a buddy :) A female goose would definitely be the best choice for a companion. Even when they’re bonded to people, geese do best with other geese. There’s no specific age that would be best, as long as she’s not a baby. I wish you the best of luck, geese are wonderful and you’ll love them :)

If you don't want babies or possible aggressive ganders during mating season then maybe a gander is best. But if you are looking for possible babies and mating than maybe a goose. Ganders can get aggressive during mating season. Our friendly gander turned into a very aggressive one to protect his girls and attacked and hurt my son one day while walking to his swing set. The gander felt threatened even though he was no where near him. So mating season can bring out the worst in some.

If you want geese just for fun, go with a second gander. Ganders can become royal PIAs when they have to protect their women during breeding season. They can be a liability with small children. A pair of ganders are pretty much the same year round. If you're in Colorado, I've got a spare or 10 ganders you're welcome to.

Thanks! We're in southern Colorado, south of Pueblo. Where are you?

Boulder. Can't think of any reason I would be down your way but you never know. These are some of mine.

Percheron Chick, they're beautiful! I think I have a line on a Chinese white gander only about an hour away, but thanks! I might be the proud mama of TWO by the weekend!
