Good evening,
This is my first post, and my first problem. Here's the rundown.
Symptoms started Tuesday June 12th, she was fine in the morning and sick in the afternoon.
She seems a little lighter than the other hens but not significantly.
We switched from soft wood shavings to straw four days ago so three days before symptoms
I can't think of anything that she could have gotten into she was in her run and coop along with the other birds
She is a six week old Leghorn hen
lethargic, and listless. She just stands in one place with her chest puffed up and her neck contracted. she has been spending increasing amount of time with her eyes shut.
She doesn't try to get away when we pick her up like she normally does, she lets us pull on her wings, ruffle through her feathers, flip her upside down, and she doesn't try to get away or even chirp in complaint( very odd behavior for a normally antisocial hen)
No breathing difficulties, No nasal discharge, Poop looks normal as far as I can tell( no blood, worms, or anything unusual)
eight other hens the same age all doing normal along with three ducks. No obvious signs of mites or lice.
Yesterday she ate and drank normally(I think) we saw her eat and drink a few times. Today we haven't seen her eat or drink so we have isolated her so we can observe her. She did have acceptable looking runny poop this evening so I think she's getting water.
I went ahead and bought her some vitamins from the tractor supply store that the lady recommended, but she hasn't drank any.
I have tried to check her crop, but it's not something I've ever done before. If I did it correctly her crop feels soft and squishy, but I'm entirely new to this so I may be way off.
here are two pics so you can see her puffed up and contracted. The red on her feathers is wood stain she brushed up against a few weeks ago while we were staining the coop. She and two others got some on them I hope this isn't a late sign of a complication from the stain.
I am at a loss as to what's wrong with my hen and I'm afraid that she may not live. The local vet who works on chickens wants 55 dollars just to look at her and I'm not prepared to spend that on a chicken at this point. but I do want to help her if I can.
Any of your help would be very appreciated, I didn't think I was going to get attached to a chicken, but I've been worried sick and she's not getting any better.
