Our sex-links are 3 weeks and a couple days old. All seems to be going well, however there is a vast difference between the 'runt' and the larger chicks. One is half the size of the two biggest (of four). She feathered in slower etc. but otherwise seems OK. Anyhow see the picture.

Is this normal or is something wrong?

I had 3 BR, 3 BO, 2 RIR and 2 EE and they all matured and feathered out at differing rates.

The runt of the whole bunch was one of the RIR's which I didn't think was going to make it. She sayed tiny and slept a whole lot under the heat lamp.

At 9 wks, she is bigger than the other RIR and a couple of the BO's.

mine too--I had 2 of my RIR x BO mix chicks hatch out-the runt-is now bigger than the other-and I think she is a pullet-31 days old today!!!

Thanks. I'm only concerned as she is staying smaller and we are at about day 24 now. Not that we'd mind a small hen given we are in the city...

My parents had chicks this winter and had one that stayed smaller than the others for months. They called her Little Chicken and the other chickens took care of her and protected her.

Little Chicken is now normal sized and doing well!
