Skin pests

Stupid question as follows:

Do I treat my chickens routinely for various skin pests or do I inspect them to identify said pests and then treat?

I am relatively new to this and am not sure what I am looking for.

I don't treat the chickens unless they have a problem. Until then, I just provide good dust baths and check them occasionally.
