I'm in Michigan and I have two 2-year old RIRs. They have a cozy run and a 3'x4' coop with straw. I've been feeding them Layena and I have a 40W lamp in the coop during the day until 8pmish to keep them laying. Tonight, I tucked them in and rewatered them, and harvested an egg coated in a slimy icky coating. It was colorless and odorless. They don't have a laying box, so they lay in a little nest in the straw and there are often specks of poo on the eggs. Any idea what this coating could be? I'm familiar with bloom, and that always seems like a thin coating that evaporates immediately. This was thick and gooey but without color or odor. Any ideas?

I suspect your avatar did it.

I really don't know, But I get that occasionally too, so I will subscribe to this so when an intelligent and informed person posts with a great answer, I'll then know... but that cat looks guilty.

Once in a while my chickens will lay a weird egg. I have had eggs with membrains on the outside of the shell, shell less eggs, dimpled eggs, even two tone eggs. I assume that the system of making eggs just "hiccups" once in a while and a weird egg is a product of that. Or it could be that there was an egg that was broken in that spot and it got the other egg dirty.

Now that I think about it, it basically felt like egg white. So, given what others have said about how the laying process sometimes gets ahead of itself, I'm going to assume that it was white that just ended up on the outside. I should candle it and see if there's anything interesting.

I have one that always lays a slimy egg. I didn't know it was like this until today. The egg was fresh and the goo had not dried. Usually they have already dried and it is sort of shiny and sticky. Should I be worried about one of my girls?

Imafarmernow,
An egg right from the faucet is warm and wet. Do not worry about your girls. It sounds like one of the final layers of membrane that keeps the pernicious bits out and the healthy bits in. Mother nature is cool.
OH! and welcome to BYC!
I hope you are finding it fun and friendly. Go check out random pictures. It is always good for a laugh.
