SLW/Lavender Orpington…why is this so confusing??

Ok so for some ridiculous reason I just assumed my two SLW’s were pullets. All my other chicks have single combs so I kind of just forgot about them possible not being pullets…then someone posted on one of the FB groups their SLW pullets around the same age and I realized they all have black combs, where mine are both BRIGHT red! Same as it’s wattles coming in.

My other not sure is one of my lavender orpingtons. I have 3, and while it’s not crazy pink, it’s definitely darker than the other 2 and much taller. I took an extra pic of one of the others for comparison (last pic).

They are also all exactly 5 weeks old today.

Am I crazy??? I’m definitely driving my husband nuts with my new predictions everyday. I’m so new at this, I have no clue!

The first one looks like a cockerel. It's got the stare down, what mean eyes it has.

Looks like the second one might be as well, I can't tell very well from the picture. Wyandottes can be perplexing to sex because of their comb types.

I would say cockerel on that Orpington as well.

I drive my husband insane with predictions as well! Sometimes I just have to talk to myself with the predictions. Or sometimes the chickens!

Definitely the look! They are both very fiesty compared to my others but I assumed it was a breed thing…maybe not so much! The close up is with the 2nd one. They both don’t have much to speak of feathers yet either but again…I chalked that up to the SLW.

Aww my poor Orpington. So Charlotte becomes Charlie. lol

Ohh SLW are definitely feisty. I have 3 of them, all hens, and goodness are they feisty!

Lucky for you, Orpingtons tend to be sweet! Wyandottes... not so much.

Well that’s good to know! Yeah that lavender is one of my favorites. So sweet and gentle. Buuutttt one of the wyandottes is my 2 year olds “pet”. So I’m not sure who will be leaving. lol.

Once they mature, I am sure you will know. And once that Wyandotte gets older, if he sticks to the Wyandotte temperament, your 2 year old could get hurt.

Not all Wyandottes are mean though, it really depends on the bird itself!

One of my Buff Orpington cockerels loves to get some pets and scratches. Maybe your Orpington will become the same way!

That is a VERY good point, thank you for the tip! Thats good info about your Orpington cockerels, I have 5 orpingtons and so far they are all super sweet! Even the apparent cockerel, although he is a little more curious/assertive than the others.

I named one of my Orpington hens Cuddle Bug, Bug for short! She runs up to me and rests her head on my lap for some love!

Orpington cockerels would be your best bet if you want your daughter near your flock!

Id say the orp is a cockerel for sure.
Wyandottes are a little tricky. They pink up early sometimes. id probably say cockerel to though.

i have a black laced red wyandotte with a straight comb, but she is my second nicest hen ive had.
Then i have a SLW who absolutely hates any people interaction even though she was good as a chick

Thanks for the input! Yeah that makes sense. This guessing game is both entertaining and prone to driving someone crazy! 😂

Even when they were smaller the 2 SLW’s didn’t like being handled very much compared to my others. I guess we’ll see, but I’m not too hopeful.
