Curious if anyone has mini-coop designs/ideas appropriate for a small group of 3 bantams? New to keeping chickens, planning to start with 2-3 bantams in my Seattle urban backyard.

Have been looking at modifying something like the Ware Backyard Hutch (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751761) by setting it atop a larger 15 sq ft run. Not sure if the enclosed portion is really enough space for 2-3 bantams though.

Thanks for your help!

Bantams require 2-3 square feet of space each, so since the enclosed space is 7 square feet I would guess you could get away with 2 bantams comfortably. Nice little tractor.

Sorry, after doing the math, the enclosed space does seem too small.

I looked more carefully at the ad and when they say "floor space" they are talking about both inside the enclosure and the run space. Yeah, that hutch is lovely, but too small.

Two weeks ago we bought 4 chicks. I'm working on one this week! The house itself is 3' x 4' with a yard the same size and access under the house. I will probably extend the yard when they get bigger. I plan on using the barn as one side. Maybe you could attach to the side of the house?

I*ve seen it in real life, and it is small. It*s also really flimsy.

We just finished our first coop and run. We bought a medium wood dog house, jigsawed a large access door on one long side, cut two large wire-covered vent holes, raised it up about 20 inches on 2x4s and then made an attached run with 2x2s and welded wire. The coop is just over 6 sq feet and the run (including the under-coop part) is about 15 sq feet. We have mild winters and the girls (a Wellie and a little silkie) spend most of their day free-ranging in the yard with us so this was enough space for them. I*m guessing the whole thing would cost you about $200 if you had to go out and buy all the materials at a hardware store.

This would work. Will

Where are you in Washington?

I got this REALLY sturdy dog house from an old guy down the road for $150.00. 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 ft with piano hinge, double floor (made on top of a pallet).

He said he can make one for less $ out of OSB instead of plywood.

I'm planning on putting my 3 banties (2 silkies 1 cochin) in mine and making a tractor out of it.

I considered the arc type tractor but it rains so darn much in Washington that the chicks would be wet because of the style.

Let me know if you want info on the guy in Olympia.

Since this picture was taken, I added more ventilation. Plan to primmer and paint the interior, add vinyl, paint the exterior barn red with white trim and stenciling, add something to the roof because of the Washington rain. I think it's going to be adorable when I'm done with it.
