Small Privacy Fenced Yard = Huge Chicken Run? :)

What type of netting are you talking about? I used a plastic netting on one of my runs and had a Red tail Hawk dive straight through it and then got stuck inside because he could not fly out through the hole he made!! He ended up snacking on a few pheasants before he was discovered.

The "poultry netting" I was referring to was the product under that name at the hardware stores, which seems more accurately to be called 1" chicken wire.

I'm thinking it would have the be heck of a determined hawk, to be diving within 8' of the side of the house...but I wonder if a few nice fat pullets might be enough incentive to inspire that? I've seen weirder behaviour from hawks...

Years ago I had chickens in a converted dog house (a very large dog house) coop and a run w/no netting over it in a suburban area near some woods. We kept them in by clipping their wings, and never had a flying predator problem. We did not shut them in at night however and had predations over the years from raccoons and a neighbors dog.

AHHH the Poultry Netting (Wire) is what I built the sides of my runs with and it will take a beating. Over the winter I had a really determined Coyote run and slam into the bottom of the human door on my chicken run and he left a large concave dent (and lots of hair) in the wire bottom of the door but never got through. Just make sure you really secure everything down and you will be fine for anything coyote size and smaller.
