Our broody hen had eight eggs. Now she has one. We found several smashed on the ground. At night, she's surrounded by the rest of the flock. Could they have eaten her eggs? The flock free ranges during the day. This is Jody's first time sitting on eggs.

Possibly, but just as likely, since it's her first time sitting eggs - that's she just hasn't figured it out yet and/or is clumsy. You can try and move her to a more private location to be assured. Usually they figure it out if it's just her being awkward.

Other hens getting into the nest in an attempt to lay eggs or fighting with the broody hen might have caused the problem. Also some very heavy or extremely feather footed hens inadvertently crush eggs - especially when they start pipping. I always try to isolate setting hens from the flock.

Thank you. This is a learning experience for everybody.
