My hatch is going great and today is day 21 and I already have 7 running around, one struggling to get out of part open shell and 4-5 eggs pipped...BUT I can smell a bad egg I think...or could it be just the other eggs already opened?

I know I can't open the bator with those eggs pipped and cracked...could the smell be the other eggs shells that have opened? it doesn't smell too bad only when I put my nose right up to the bator.

Should I do anything? or even if it is a bad egg will it be fine in there?

Is it a strong egg odor or is it a stink? I haven't had an egg bomb in the bator yet but from what I have read they really smell.

Unless you can pin point the egg that smells and whip it out quickly you are probably best to just leave it hopefully if it is a rotten egg it won't explode till after your babies have hatched

explode? will it really do that? will it hurt the chicks in there? and I think it IS a STINKY egg

there are only 2 or 3? eggs that have not pipped should I leave them or grab, sniff and put back in? but I am worried about all the eggs trying to open...

Yes they can explode and from what I read on other threads it is a real stink then. I do agree with mrslb333 though, if you can only smell it when you are really close to the bator, you will probably be OK. Better not to chance the eggs that are pipped. Just be really careful taking the chicks out not to break open the dud. Handle it carefully and put it in a zip lock baggie as soon as you get it out of the bator.

thanks for the tips...I will leave it all alone.

No I didn't candle them as they are black marran and blue ameraucana eggs...I couldn't see through them and didn't know really what to look for. and it does stink but only when i bend down and smell the bator ...thanks I will just sit on my hands

Now when you all say..EXPLODE...does it really blow everywhere?

Yes and its a nightmare to clean and get rid of the stench, I'd have thought if you haven't noticed the smell till now you should be safe

I read a post once where they had an egg explode and they had to repaint the room. Definitely handle with care! Have a ziplock handy when you are ready to get that egg out. In fact if you can, take the bator outside just in case when you go to remove it. Better safe than sorry.
