I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but figured since it is about eggs, it'd be the best place to post.

I have a pullet who recently started laying. When I got her from TSC, she was in the bin labeled as Pearl Onyx or Onyx Pearl. The bin next to that one was labeled as Smokey Pearl. I quickly realized she is not a Pearl Onyx, so I just assumed she was a Smokey Pearl, since that was the only other breed that was yellow/white that they had that day.

As she has gotten older I noticed her earlobes are white, so I started thinking she may be a California white. She is white with black spots.

Well she started laying and she lays a white egg, well an off white egg. When the egg is alone it looks white, but when I compare it next to my leghorns egg, it looks off white/a tiny bit tinted.

So my question is, is California white eggs supposed to be as white as a leghorn or are they not as bright white? Or is it possible that a Smokey pearl can lay a really bright egg that looks almost white?

Also, if you have pictures of a Smokey pearl or California white eggs/chicken and want to share it, I would greatly appreciate it.

Tractor supply doesn’t always get pure bred chickens, I got 3 French black copper marans and 3 lavender Orpington’s, two Orpington’s died but I ended up with 1 black copper maran, 1 barnyard mix of some sort of maran but just payed light brown eggs, and a Saphire gem. A few weeks ago I went to atwoods to get some guineas and there was an old faithful chick in the keet bin that I had to move back because the worker knew no different.

I know at TSC never know what your really going to get. My leghorn was supposed to be a California white, then for a bit I thought she was a meat bird because of how fast she grew the first couple weeks, but since she has matured I know she is a leghorn. When I bought my leghorn, the worker tried to sell me a Silver Laced Wyandotte, telling me it was a Barred Rock. I did end up buying the Wyandotte but I knew she was a Wyandotte based on her coloration, so thankfully I knew she wouldn't be a Barred Rock.

For the chicken I posted about, all 3 breeds are mixes/Hybrids, California white, smokey pearl and onyx pearl. I'm pretty sure she is a California white, her eggs have since gotten more of a bright white compared to her first few eggs. The smokey pearl and onyx pearl are brown egg layers, California whites lay white eggs.

Post a pic of your chicken and I can help ID it
I haven't been able to get a picture but I will try to get one this afternoon of her. Her breed really isn't a big deal, she's my daughter's chicken, and my daughters favorite. I was just mainly curious if California white eggs are a bit darker then leghorn eggs or not as bright white.

It’s just because sometimes a little different breed sneaks in there and then boom something that looks like it should lay white eggs lays a cream egg, it just happens there’s nothing wrong with your chicken
