I hit a small snake while mowing the other day, it was pretty mangled so a picture wouldn't help but here's a description, if anyone can help it would be appreciated. About 14" long with a very dark green/black back. Brilliant yellow underbelly with very distinct black rectangles arranged almost like an offset barcode.
I figure it to be some species of Garter snake but I can't find a picture of this particular breed anywhere.
Thanks,

Chris.

Could also possibly be some kind of racer with the description.

No stripe, and all the Garter snakes i've seen in the field and in pictures seem to have some kind of upper body pattern. The back of this one was almost solid with just a very slight hint of colour at the scale edges.

Thanks.
That looks very much like it, mine was darker across its back though, maybe a juvenile ? There is a pond about 50 yards from where I found it so that also makes sense. We are located in mid Missouri.
