sneezes and runny nose.

One of the new girls is displaying cold like symptoms. She is sneezing hand has a runny nose, poop looks normal, still eating, drift free enclosed housing with another 3 girls. Should i quarantine her indoors, is this a vet job?

I had a hen with a similar problem minus the runny nose. Instead she had wheezy breathing. I brought her inside and gave her and the rest of my flock duramycin-10 in their water for a week. Then three days of electrolytes. I put her back out with the flock after the week inside and everyone has been healthy since. The vet is up to you. Many people can't afford the vet costs for one chicken and successfully treat their birds themselves. I have read stories about horrible vets on here too, so if you take her to the vet make sure you do some research.
The folks on the natural chicken thread might be able to help you better. Lots of experienced people there. Good luck with your girl

hi mine had those same symptoms. here is how I treated mine. I used Tylosin or Tylan50 antibiotic. its an excellent choice for respiratory. dose is large bird 1/2cc small bird 1/4cc once daily in the breast for 5 days
.I choose the injection over water soluble antibiotic because dose is much more controlled and not contingent on the amount drank. also it gets into the blood stream faster. some times when they are ill they won't drink as much as they should and that also effects dose if your using a water soluble antibiotic. so I prefer the injection. I noticed a significant improvement in a few days. Tylan 50 works very good. now my birds are all better. thank God! you can get Tylan50 at the feed store. do not worry that the bottle says for cattle and swine. MANY poultry owners including myself choose and successfully treat with Tylan50. it works very well for respiratory illness. hope this helps. best of luck

the feed store carries both. just ask for the sharps they have them. also ask them where the Tylan50 is. its usually in the cattle section or they might keep it up front depending on the store. I use diabetic needles because they are smaller. usually you can order those from B&D needle supplier. but you can acquire a regular syringe from feed store. hope this helps. when you give the injection just give in the breast muscle.I like using a alcohol swab before hand it helps part the feathers and exposes the skin nicely. best wishes

took her to the vet this evening and got the T50 off them, sadly didn't have any sharps as it was an out of hours emergency vet miles away with no avian specialist in at the time. so its oral administer only (in their water) doing all the flock to make sure as i no from previous keeping that most bird problems are contagious. i am so angry at my self for not spotting this when i collected them from the previous owner 2 weeks ago.

Sometimes these things take time to show up. Its not your fault. I've read chickens don't get colds, but I think they can get allergies. I've noticed a lot of people having similar respiratory issues in their flock. It makes me wonder if all the plants blooming and the pollen, and the dusty wind here, causes them the same discomfort it does people who are sensitive to that stuff. Don't beat yourself up. Everyone ends up with a sick bird at some point. It is the way of nature. I'm sure everyone will pull through just fine. just keep an eye out for any worsening symptoms, and if they are laying don't eat the eggs for 3 weeks I believe it was. Best of luck to you! Bronya- did your chickens get better? I have a chicken with a slightly runny nose and occasional sneezing.. Someone just told me to cull them all. I won't be jumping to that. Did you have luck with the Tylan? Thank you!
