Hi everyone! I’m looking for some help with one of my hens who’s unfortunately sick. She’s super sneezy, I can hear how congested she is especially when she sneezes. She’s breathing with her mouth open and has been on and off wheezing as she breathes. Her behavior isn’t very different, still running around as normal and eating and drinking. Some other hens have a small sneeze going on as well, but this one hen is super stuffed up. I put tylosin in their water, but wondering if there’s something else I should be doing and what this possibly is? I will try to upload a video I have of her ASAP I just need to convert it to the correct format. Also, I live in southern Maine, so it’s a bit colder here now, so I’m not sure if it’s perhaps just a cold? Thanks I’m advance guys!

I had the same problem! it is most likely raspatory. VetRx can be bought on amazon for about $10. Works like magic and only takes a few days until the raspatory problem clears up! good luck :)

edit:
place a bit on their beaks (around their nostrils), its easiest at night

Have you added new birds to your flock recently?
Closed up the coop and ventilation is poor, any strong ammonia odors in the coop, added new bedding/straw that is dusty?

Is her crop emptying overnight?

Could be something environmental if you are suddenly seeing more than one with symptoms and have not introduced new birds.

No I haven’t introduced any new birds at all. We have good ventilation in the coop and I frequently open the window on nice days during the day to air it out. I scoop their poop everyday so no ammonia smell builds up really.

I think she might be getting better though? I’m not entirely sure, I haven’t had a chance to observe her much because of work/school. I haven’t noticed any wheezing though when I go to close them in for the night which makes me feel better. I looked for VetRX at tractor supply near my but couldn’t find anything. I need to make a first aid kit for sure and plan to, but we all know it’s not cheap😅

Can you tell us if you have ever noticed any bubbles or foam, or gunk in either eye of the sick bird, or mucus from her nostrils or beak? Does she act like she is swallowing mucus in her beak that has drained from her sinus cavities? Vet Rx contains oils of herbs, oregano, rosemary, and balsam tree, and camphor, and although it is safe, your Tylosin is probably best if your birds have MG. Viruses (infectious bronchitis, others) are common and will not respond to antibiotics, but symptoms may clear up in a few weeks.

What about night time ventilation? You should have good air flow all the time, even in winter/cold months.

Where are you located in the world?

She seems to be getting better on her own? If she is, then I'd just wait and see if she continues to improve.

VetRx is just a remedy like Vapor Rub for humans, it won't cure anything. It's possible it will help alleviate symptoms for a short period of time, but it sounds like it may not be needed since she's better.
