I live in a 150 year old farm house, so I know there is a lot of smells that come with older houses.

When I walk in my front door you get hit with this smell, I dont know how to describe it but it just smells ummmm well OLD

It is not a foul odour. It reminds me of when I was a kid and friends of my parents had an old garage with an apartment above it the apartment was used as a kids area to play and it had this smell I am about to call it the smell of old wood.

What can I do to get rid of that smell or at least "tone" it down a bit?

I have washed my floors many times ... avid 2X a week floor washer cause we have pets that track in dirt amongst other things

I have washed my walls

painted and sealed in all the old stuff with a primer

but still I have the "old" smell I refuse to have anyone over to my house cause I am really self conscience about this smell

I have glade plug ins ALL OVER the place but that is starting to get expensive and I had to cut back

Could it be wood decay? I find some old houses have that woodsy forrest rot smell (hard to explain but it was close to the smell of camping at the river).

Is it a musty smell? That usually means that mold is abounds somewhere. Might be behind the walls.

I hate to say it, but if it is old wood, You'll have to find out exactly where the smell is coming from and remove it

We had a cat a while back who peed on our carpet, and even after multiple carpet shampoos and cleanings, we still had to rip the carpet up and replace it. sometimes smells just stick

Musty old wood smell. Could it be coming up from under the door or floor boards like up from the basement? Basements tend to get damp in the summers and it could be waffing up from there.

I have to run a dehumidifier in my basement in the summer and it helps alot.

Do you have a basement that is musty smelling especially in summer? A dehumidifier would do the trick. Try Febreeze on cloth items that are holding onto the smell. I wish we had smellavision, then we could help identify it!

You could try an ozone generator.

You have to be really careful using them, but they can be very effective in removing smells.

A friend had skunk smell in her house - ozone generator did the trick.

1859 house was built

1949 house burned in a fire, all the outside walls remained standing it was just the kitchen area and the west side of the house that was damaged.

abt 1999 the house was *busted* for a grow op. NONE of the plants were in the house they were all in the yard outside. The house was completely redone on the inside walls removed ect. every year the house is inspected for mould cause of the age and the fact of the grow op history. (the grow op was not ours we did not live here at that time

) Our home is owned my the GRCA (Grand river conservation authority) kinda like a state park thingie so they dont mess around when it comes to the homes especially this one cause it is classified "historical"
