i believe he was trying to say that the terms breed and species are not inter-changeable species is the lowest taxonomic ranking and means that all animals in that grouping are capable of breeding offspring of both genders. a breed is even more specific than species, a breed is a group of domestic animals which share similar behavior, appearance and multiple other characteristics. thus pheasants are a species, since they are still mostly wild, do not share recent genetic ancestry and chickens are a breed since people having been playing god with them since the beginning of time.
