I'm looking for some expertise on if these are Hens or Roosters, or both.
I bought what should have been Sex-links eggs, and hatched them. The eggs were brown, and were supposed to be the kind that were all black if they were female, and black with a white dot on their head if they were male. Most came out that way, however I got these 2 yellow chicks in the batch. At first I thought they may be golden's, but now I have no idea.
They were born all yellow.
These pictures are from today at just at 3 1/2 weeks old, and I have no idea what they are, or if they are male or female.
One of them is starting (the past 3 days) to show some brown feathers, and they have both turned white, from their original yellow.
Please help. I have some pictures of when they were first hatched as well if this helps.

This is Lemon

This is peep

Thank you!

I think they are both cockerels. Certainly the bottom one is, top one has some thick legs. They look to have Leghorn in them, and the top one has a pea comb?

Do you know what breeds were used to create these sex link eggs?

I think the first is a hen and the second is definitely a roo with that red comb. My guess on the hen is easily debatable though

Keesmom, I don't know what breed these came from, but I'm going to see him today, so I'll ask. I'm thinking that they weren't even sex link eggs at all, and just got caught up in the batch that I got. If they were sex links, what would show them as male and female?

ChickenChatten, thanks for the response. Red comb, hu? I just checked and the pictures are accurate to the colors.

This person isn't breeding sex link to sex link, is he? Resulting chicks won't be sex linked.

Did you get them from someone in Westford?

Keesmom,

I don't think its sex linked to sex linked, but who knows. It is someone here in Westford. He's well known and has a good size operation. I've spoken to him a few times, and it's been a challenge getting the information on these little guys. I'm going to head over there to talk to him face to face as well. I see your in MA as well... perhaps you are familiar with the breeder?

Your 'breeder' just has a flock of SLs that he's letting his rooster run around with. It's a tossup what his rooster might be (something with a rose or pea comb). Any offspring produced by this will not be sex-linked.

Thanks Pele,

All the other eggs were sex linked, except for these 2, but I think he is less than diligent about how he's going about getting these eggs. I've visited his farm, and I know that he has separate coops for the different breeds and his sex linked operations. I think his collection, however, is less than accurate. I'm going to go by there today, with the known roosters, and find out what the deal is with these two guys. I'll post an update.

I really appreciate all the help with this.

Thank you all for your help on this. I went back to the breeder, and it turns out they were indeed sex linked, but with a RI white, so those were males. I figured that getting sex linked eggs were going to make my life easier! At least I got to meet more people on this forum.

Thanks again for all your help.
