I have six-week-old chicks in the pen and coop with my eleven week old first flock. I tried so hard not to love them too much.
Didn't even name them. But each day they get cuter. My adolescents act so sophisticated and leisurely. But these little kids are still wonderfully curious and playful. They get out under the gate and forage under the raspberry bush and up the mountain, so I check on them often.
Today, I went out and could not find them. I went up the mountain looking for them (not too steady on my feet up the mountain) Chick, chick, chick I kept saying. But I really haven't taught them that. Where are they?Where are they? Oh dear. FOXFOOD!
Then I settled down and listened. Tiny peeps, muffled. I followed my ears to the coop, stepping over the attitudinal hens .In the coop, the little ones were running around playing grownup. They were trying the roosts that are usually forbidden to them. Talking to each other, Chee chee chee. I remembered when I was a little girl, and truly knew how to play. Testing the world. Who knew chickens could take me back to my childhood. So dang cute.
