I love this site. On June 1st I received in the mail 50 chicks. What was I thinking???? I was raised in NJ (not the garden part of the state) and married a nice midwestern boy over 30 years ago. I have 2 married daughters and a grandbaby. About 15 years ago we bought a farm in the foothill of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the last 14 years I have been there 3 times. My friends would kid me about moving to the farm and I would say "When I have a labotomy". My husband and his friends used it as a hunting camp. We live in Florida and my hang outs are Palm Beach and South Beach, I love NYC and travelling to Europe.
My husband loves the farm and it is a great relief from his highly stressful job, so I told him I would spend last summer up there with him. I don't know what happened but I fell in love...I had my first garden, had my first canning experience, learned to drive the tractor, swam in a pond and many other great times. When we went back to FL in September all I could think about was returning to the farm in the spring, planting my garden and getting some chickens for food and eggs. So here I am, my 2nd summer on the farm and loving every minute of it. I still make lots of mistakes and I am alot like Lisa Douglas ( Oliver, the hots cakes are ready) but I have never been dirtier, sweatier, and happier than ever.
I have found the best information from all of you on this site. Thanks so much for sharing. Out of the 50 chicks, 48 are now 5 weeks old. My dog accidently killed one and one just died at about 3 days.
So hopefully you will be hearing more from me and thanks again y'all
