Hello all, I am new to Back Yard Chickens, but not new to raising, as I grew up on a farm, and as far back as 7th grade, was allowed to take on the responsibility of raising 25 hens and 2 roosters for 4-H. My parents taught me responsibility at a young age, and now a parent, I'm doing the same. It's really a life a good thing as the lessons learned raising chicks, can be applied to lots of decisions throughout life. When taken seriously, this is a very rewarding experience. My husband and I are currently teaching our daughter to raise a brood, and even let her choose the coop design. At age 27, she's decided to expand her animal family and incorporate chicks. We're starting her off with 10 Black Sex-Link Hens which are 4 weeks old now, and growing like weeds. We live in a rural area in Tennessee and have alot of room for them to explore. We do have to be careful of predators such as bear, fox, coyote etc. which can be challenging, so the coop design she chose was spot on. We're thinking of expanding our flock, and she's researching to see what breed will enhance the flock. I decided to join BYC as an asset to further my knowledge and our growing families as well. This is a very rewarding hobby that pays off 10 fold, and a win win when collecting those fresh eggs! Thanks for welcoming us to your flock, and we look forward to hearing from you all!
