So...how do you get the free ranging chickens back into the coop?

I agree that its instinctive for them to head back to their coop as darkness approaches ... they are creatures of habit - especially if the coop is a comfy place for them ... I love taking a peek after dark and watch them snuggle next to each other on the roost.

My daughter has the chickens come to her calls of "Here kitty kitty..." as she tosses out treats or scratch. If you can't laugh at 41 chickens running/waddling at you from all different directions when you call "here kitty kitty" then something's wrong.

Keep the chickens in the coop for a couple days. After a couple days let them out. when it comes to night time they will go in there by themself. Then you can just close the door.

The same way they went out...through the door.

keep 'em in the coop for the first few days.
then after at least 5 days, let 'em out.
leave the door open. they'll know what to do.
