BATOR MAKIN TIME!!!!

So some of you may have seen that I made a styrofoam cooler incubator over the weekend (My First homemade bator), and although fun, after putting in the water bowls, it was pretty small, so I looked at Miss Prissys Bread Box bator, and thought "I must find something cool to make a incubator!". So being that I work at a mini storage, and we have several units devoted to Yard sale things people abandoned, I went on a search, and found a hidden Gem! This cool old wooden box, that had walls that were about 1.5 inches thick, so I knew it would hold heat well, so I got to work. I Picked up a light socket, wires, PC fan (Another storage find), some hinges, some foam board and my trusty drill & Saw. First I cut a window in the top, and framed it with glass and a window frame I also found in the garage sale storage unit. Then I measured and cut the foamboard to glue to the top to seal in the heat. Next I screwed on the hinges to hold the lid in place, and drilled the holes for the light. I affixed the light, wired it up, then sealed the wire hole with cocking. Next I Wired the PC fan, and affixed it inside. Next I driled the vent holes, and now it is heating. I am waiting for the thermostat I ordered on ebay ( http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-Digital-Te...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3efc6852df ), I'm told this thermostat is amazing for holding a steady temp.

OK, I'm jealous! I'm about to launch full bore into making one from scratch and here you lay your hands on the perfect box!

Lucky Wench! And a pretty box it is too I might add!

You are going to find something to cover your water dish with, right? Can't have little drowned chickies. That would be too tragic to even think about!

Outside of that minor little detail, looking good girl! Looking very good! You'll be able to quench that hatching desire long before I even have mine framed out! I am just soooooo jealous!

LOL, Yes I will be covering the Water dish, my eggs don't come in for another couple of weeks, so I just put off getting the mesh. And I do have vent holes, I just put those in after I took the picture.

Thank you all so much!

I'm excited, now I'm just trying to think of an ingenious idea to make a auto egg turner, sense if I remember right, the LG and Hovabator auto turners would be too wide for my box.

Any Ideas?

Do you all think 2 vent holes is enough? I know my hovabator only had 2, but it was 1/3 the size.

Hovabators have 8 - 12 small vent holes in the bottom. Those are for oxygen exchange. Of course, they are tiny, and not enough.

If I were you, I would be sure to have adequate opportunity for oxygen. If you have extra holes ... that is better, as you can always cover them, too. BUT, just know ... without enough oxygen, nothing will hatch! They really need the oxygen.
