Today I got a bylaw letter and it stated I had until the 17 th to remove my rabbit hutch and rabbits from my back yard, I can keep them in the house and free range them during the day but no rabbit structure or hen house. I wonder if I can just get a dog kennal and use that for the hens, taking them inside at night;) can we say a large dog house:) What pisses me off the most is no one has ant idea about the bylaws, I mean really they have no clue, this sucks. He said if I don't remove them we will have to go to court and he will fine me! I guess this spring I will have to proof my backyard so that both the chickens and the rabbits can " free range".

A rabbit hutch isnt allowed????? Wow. Just Wow.
But then I have heard of places where clothelines arent allowed either.
I wish I knew what to tell you. Thats just crazy.

We are going to move the hutch to the covered front porch and instead of 4 female scale back to 3. We also are setting up the chicken run to look like a dog run. What are they going to say about that, no you can't have a dog run?? instead of 8 large chickens I might have to stick with 4 or 5.

AGREED!!! this is the exact reason I moved to the boonies I wasn't even allowed a dog house because dogs tear up awns with digging and they smell blah blah blah so watch your back or start looking for a house in the country.

Good luck to you.

The thing is our city isn't a fancy city nor one with a good rep. We have tons of drug houses, dealers, hookers, thiefs, my city has become so bad that all I want to do is move( not going to happen), I think I might take this up with someone high up, as the man who's dealing with us claims the hutch is against the by law due to his interpretation of the law.

*note: when I bought my dog, I told the man I wanted a dog also for protection, he replied do you live in St.Catharines? I live 2 cities away and never called him just emailed him a few times!

First of all, get a copy of the regulations and look for yourself. Just because an authority figure tells you a regulation says such and such does not mean that it does. Chek out definitions carefully. Secondly, you can make a rabbitry or chicken coop look like a garden shed with lattice and climbing vines and no one will be the wiser.

Yes, definitely get a copy of the bylaws. This is why I will never live within any city limits or anyplace with covenants or bylaws. If I wanna paint my house pink, have a chicken coop, leave my Christmas lights up all year, leave my garage door open and have a car parked outside, that's nobody's business but mine.

I was thinking a plastic play house converted into a chicken house for the warm days should be ok, I think I could get away with that, although the litter might be an issuedog house would work as we have 2 dogs.
